Open the .AI file like any regular file
Open the Swatches or Brushes panel via "Window" & "Swatches"

Open the Swatches panel via "Window" & "Swatches"
Click on the top right corner and select "Open Swatch Library" & "Other Library" and browse to find the .AI file
How to use in Illustrator

You can scale the pattern as you like using the "Scale Tool" by double clicking it and selecting only the "Transform Pattern" checkbox.

If you want to change the coloring of a pattern, go to "Edit", "Edit Colors" & "Recolor Artwork" and apply changes as you like.
